Breast reconstruction offers a result that looks like a natural breast. Most women
who have this procedure are glad that they did. Our greatest joy is being able to
make a positive difference in the lives of our patients.
What is breast reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction is achieved through several plastic surgery techniques that
attempt to restore a breast to near normal shape, appearance and size following
mastectomy. It cannot give a woman back her breast - a reconstructed breast does
not have natural sensations. However, the surgery offers a result that looks like
a breast. Most women who had breast reconstruction are glad they did.
The breast reconstruction procedure
This procedure involves the use of implants or relocated flaps of the patient's
own tissue. One type of breast reconstruction uses breast implants — silicone devices
filled with silicone or salt water (saline) — to reshape your breasts. Breast reconstruction
with breast implants is a complex procedure performed by a plastic surgeon. The
breast reconstruction process can start at the time of your mastectomy or it can
be done as a delayed procedure. The breast reconstruction process usually requires
two or more operations — and several visits to your doctor — to insert, position
and fill the breast implants.
Is Breast Reconstruction Considered Cosmetic Surgery?
Is Restoring the breast through breast reconstruction is not considered cosmetic
surgery. Operations performed to restore anatomy and symmetry, like breast reconstruction
after a mastectomy, are considered reconstructive surgery.
